Picking the Right High School Baseball Camps

High school baseball players want two things out of baseball camp. They want to learn new skills that will increase their abilities and they want to be seen by college and professional recruiters. Keep in mind that many serious players attend multiple camps, either in a single summer or over the years. If you can afford to do multiple baseball camps this summer, you should try camps that offer different experiences. This can include a general camp, a position specific camp, and a showcase or prospect camp. For players who have to choose one or the other this summer, you’ll want to decide which of these is the most important for this year.

Recruiting vs. Skills High School Baseball Camps

Juniors and seniors who are looking for an opportunity to play college baseball should consider attending a recruiting camp. This can be a prospect camp, hosted by a particular university and designed for that school’s coaching staff to see and evaluate potential players, or a showcase, where coaches and scouts from several schools will be present. If you want to attend a particular school, the prospect camp is a good option. If you want to be seen and considered by several schools, a showcase is a better bet. Keep in mind that there are many showcases every year, but they aren’t all on the up-and-up. Do your research before committing any money to a showcase. You’ll want to find one with a good reputation and a history of results.

If you’re a young high school player, then a recruiting camp may be a bit premature. While it is possible that a college coach will see and remember you in two or three years when it comes time for you to choose a school, you’re better off waiting until you’re closer to college age. For these players, skills camps are the better choice. You’ll be able to learn important drills and techniques that you can build on as you continue to play and practice in high school. Getting a solid foundation early can be a great boost to your later career.
