General and Focused Basketball Skills Camps
Some basketball camps offer general skills training while others focus on the skills that are most important for specific positions. Both options are good for serious athletes who are dedicated to improving their abilities.
Specific position camps focus on point guards, forwards, or post players. Some camps will have a more focused breakdown of positions and offer camps for very specific areas, like lower post play or shooting forwards. Whether one way of dividing athletes into positions is better than the other is debatable. The more specific the position instruction is, the better if that is exactly where you need to improve your skills, but for many players, having a broader range of instruction isn’t a bad idea.
General skills camps will do drills and stations for all player positions. They will also spend time teaching drills and techniques for the fundamental skills, like dribbling, passing, and shooting. It’s never a bad idea to work on your core fundamentals and attending a camp that is going to spend more time on these basic elements will give you a chance to become a better all-around player. The other good thing about a general skills camp is that you will be playing with other athletes that focus on other positions, giving you a chance to play and train with players in positions you will come up against in regular season play.
Basketball Skills Camps Should Focus on the Mental Game
All good basketball camps, focused or general, will spend some time on the mental aspects of the game. Basketball is a sport where split second decisions must be made and where players need to be able to see all their teammates at all times. This is the type of skill that separates good basketball players from excellent ones. Being able to stay focused under pressure, and in good and bad situations, is the key to performing at your best.
