Different Types of Boys Basketball Camps
There are several national basketball camps for boys that sponsor events around the country. National camps often boast greater exposure to coaches and scouts, in addition to offering solid instruction. If there aren’t any national camps in your area, don’t despair. Consider a university camp or local high school camp instead.
Local and University Boys Basketball Camps
Local high school basketball camps are run by area high schools and are usually day camps with a general skills focus. These camps have two advantages. One, they are cheaper. Transportation costs will be minimal, and, because campers will be returning home after each day’s session, there are no room or board fees, either. Two, these camps are less intensive. This is an advantage for younger campers, especially, as they will be able to return home after classes to decompress and think about other things. If you don’t think your child is ready to handle the stress of a weeklong overnight camp, a local camp is a great way to allow them the get further instruction.
University basketball camps are hosted by colleges and universities, both four year and junior colleges. Some of these camps will also be day camps while others will be weeklong overnight affairs. Many colleges will offer both types. If you live within easy commute of a university camp, you may be able to register as a commuter camper. This will eliminate the costs associated with staying at the university’s dorms for the week, while still allowing you to attend the longer, more intense camp sessions. This can be a good compromise between an overnight and a local day camp.
