Making Athletic Summer Camps More Affordable
While some athletic summer camps, like the Nike Football Camp, are free, they aren’t open to all players. If you don’t qualify for a camp like this, here are some tips to make going to camp less expensive.
Check for Discounts and Cheaper Options at Athletic Summer Camps
Some athletic summer camps offer discounts for several different reasons. If you register more than one child from your family for the camp, you may be eligible for a discounted rate. Some camps also give a team discount when three or more players from the same team register for the same camp. Talk with your coach or teammates about arranging a team camp experience to get a discount for all team members.
Another option is to attend a camp as a commuter camper instead of an overnight camper. This will only work if the host school is close enough to get to every day. If you do find a camp being hosted at a local college, see if you can register as a commuter. In some cases, you’ll still get some meals included. Being a commuter will make the camp more affordable, though it will mean that you won’t get the experience of being with your fellow campmates after practices.
You can also consider attending a day camp. University camps often have a day camp as well as an overnight camp. Day camps can be full or half day, and will offer the same level of instruction. The experience won’t be as immersive, but it will give you a chance to improve your skills at a lower cost. Some national camps allow non-campers to attend clinics that will be presented during the weeklong camp. Just attending the clinic is another option for those with less financial support.
