Information about Agility Camps
Speed and strength training are the foundation of athletic workouts. 20 or 30 years ago, much emphasis was placed on player lifting weights to get a big as possible. In the last 10-15 years, coaches wanted players who were both big and fast. Now, conditioning coaches are placing heavy emphasis on agility drills.
The ability to be nimble and quick is now the new training rage. Sports that operate in tight spaces, such as volleyball, places a high demand on players who can make quick bursts to get to the ball. There are many drills conditioning coaches use, such as the dot drill, that can help players improve quickness and agility. There are many agility camps available, so let’s take a look at a few.
The UC San Diego Strength and Conditioning Camp, is a full training camp, with special emphasis on quickness and agility. UC San Diego Director of Athletic Performance Robert Mamula, and Strength and Conditioning Coach Stacy Peterson lead the drills and activity. This camp offers three camps sessions for high school athletes, and one for juniors. The camp uses plyometric training methods for explosive athletic moves, first step explosiveness, and multi-directional speed training.
The Lewis F.A.S.T. Camp is located in Humble Texas, and is a full speed and agility camp, focusing on footwork, agility, speed, and vertical explosion. Coach Gavin Lewis’ agility training places heavy emphasis on explosive change of direction, lateral balance, and stop and start acceleration. Quickness drills are based on assisted speed development and linear speed drills. Coach Lewis is committed to training your kid to be the most explosive, quick, and agile player they are capable of.
These are just a few examples of local agility camps. Many strength and conditioning coaches teach the explosive agility and quickness drills needed for today’s athlete. Different coaches employ different methods and training techniques, so find the one that works best for your child. Good luck in your search!
