Gender Segregated and Co-Ed Sports Camps for Girls
Young women have two options if they want to attend sports camp. They can find camps that offer girls-only instruction or those that offer co-ed instruction. For younger kids, co-ed instruction is more common. Older girls may find it more difficult to find co-ed learning opportunities, but some do exist. For sports that aren’t commonly thought of as “girls sports,” co-ed opportunities may be your only option. Most camps for sports that are male dominated, like football and baseball, don’t usually say anything about gender in their information. If you are a female athlete in one of these male-dominated sports and want to attend camp, you’re going to have to contact the camp directly to see if they offer co-ed opportunities.
It can also be difficult to find sports camp opportunities for girls in certain sports. While you won’t have any trouble finding camps for girls basketball, volleyball, or tennis, finding a girls baseball camp will be more difficult. They do exist, though, so keep an eye out for those opportunities. The Philadelphia Phillies host a co-ed baseball camp for kids age nine to fourteen, for example, as do a few other local camps. While you may find a co-ed football camp opportunity, you aren’t going to find a girls only option for that sport, so young women who want to play football will have to get used to playing with the boys.
For sports with a strong history of female college competition, you’ll find plenty of options. Girls softball camps, for example, will be available all over the country this summer. Girls basketball is another option with lots of camp opportunities for learning and for recruiting. Volleyball is another sport where girls will be able to find camps very easily.
