University Sports Camp Options
Many colleges and universities offer sports camps for young athletes. These camps are often overnight camps, with campers staying in the dorms for the duration of the camp. University sports camps are often specific to a particular sport and intended for the more serious athlete, but many programs do offer options for younger or less serious players, as well.
Things to Consider When Selecting a University Sports Camp
Every college won’t have a camp for every sport and every college is better known for one sport or another. When deciding where to attend a university sports camp, you’ll want to consider several things. The first, and most obvious, is location. Will you be able to travel to a camp that is in another town or another state? You’ll also want to consider how much the camp will cost, not just in enrollment fees, but in any equipment you may need, and the cost of travel. Another consideration is scheduling. Is the camp being held at a time that you will be able to attend? You’ll want to find a camp that meets all of these needs.
Another important aspect is whether you want to attend the university or college that is hosting the camps you are looking at. You don’t have to limit yourself to camps held at schools you want to attend, of course. You’re there to learn about the game and improve your skills first and foremost. But, if you have a certain school in mind that you would really like to attend, going to a camp at that school will give you the opportunity to meet their coaching staff and maybe some of their players, get a feel for the equipment and the state of their program, and get a rough idea of what it would be like to be a part of the team at that school.
It’s important to remember that a university sports camp isn’t necessarily going to be a recruiting opportunity for you. The program may not be recruiting at the time that you attend, for example. This doesn’t make attending a college sports camp a waste. You may or may not make some good connections, but you will learn something.
